Plaisterers Award for Internal Plasterwork 2014

Award for Sydenham House

We are delighted to announce that the reinstatement of the historic ceiling at Sydenham House has been awarded the coveted Plaisterers Award for Internal Plasterwork 2014.

Following a major fire at this Grade 1 listed building in 2012, the existing ceiling was badly damaged and left in a dangerously unstable state. The ceiling dates back to 1660 and is the central focal point of this important property.

By working closely with English Heritage, a conservation architect and a specialist contractor the ceiling has been restored back to its’ former glory by using entirely traditional construction methods. The surviving enrichments were all carefully removed, cleaned and restored. Mouldings were taken so that copies could be made to replace what was lost. The entire ceiling is constructed from lime plaster and set on hand cut oak lathes.

Special thanks must go to Sean Wheatley Specialist Plaisterers and Rodney Melville Partners for their fantastic contributions in helping us to overcome this particularly difficult challenge with an award winning result.
